Protect Yourself from Recent Text Message Scams
We have recently received reports of a cell phone texting scam. Residents in the area have received SMS text messages claiming to be from credit unions in the area, including My Credit Union, indicating that their card has been deactivated and to call the number provided to reactivate their card. Please note that My Credit Union does not send text messages of this nature. The only text message you will receive regarding your My Credit Union account are those you have requested via the account alerts feature through online baking. These text messages provide only the information you requested such as withdrawal activity, low balance, check clearing, etc, and will not ask you to call to provide further information.
How the scam works
The scam is similar to the deceptive e-mail and phone scams in which scammers try to trick you into revealing personal information such as account numbers, social security numbers, and passwords. The personal information is then used to withdraw money from victims’ accounts or obtain credit in the victims’ name.
In the texting scam, cell phone users receive a text message that seems to come from a legitimate source such as a credit union or bank. The message seeks to trick the user into clicking a link or calling the number provided. Both the link and phone number are fraudulent and lead to requests for personal information that can be used for ID theft.
How to protect yourself
1. Never respond to unsolicited requests for personal or financial information received via text message, even if the request appears to come from a legitimate source that you do business with. This includes requests to “confirm, verify or update” your information.
2. Always know who you are dealing with. Don’t click on links in text messages or e-mails. Don’t call the phone numbers provided in unsolicited text messages or e-mails. Instead, call the credit union directly at 650-366-5522 or 888-USE-MYCU or call the numbers listed on the back of your credit or debit card.
3. Monitor your credit regularly for signs of irregularities. You are entitled to one free credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus. Visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call (877) 322-8228.
Remember, My Credit Union will never contact you via text message, e-mail, phone, or any other way to ask for your account numbers or passwords. If you suspect you’ve been a victim, contact My Credit Union at 650-366-5522 or 888-USE-MYCU.
